Eagan, MN – Today, Angie Craig released the following statement after Congress failed to reauthorize the Farm Bill by the Sept. 30 deadline. The House and Senate were unable to reconcile differences over funding for conservation and nutrition programs and limits on commodity programs.

"Reauthorizing a strong Farm Bill has had bipartisan support for generations, but this Congress has failed to fulfill a basic promise to our farmers by letting the legislation expire. With typically reliable markets disrupted by impulsive and unpredictable decision-making, falling commodity prices, and an already tight labor force, we are seeing a crisis unfold: net farm incomes have dropped 50 percent in the last five years alone. This inaction will only make things worse.

"Farmers and their families deserve a strong safety net, a healthy crop insurance program, and the flexibility to do right by our environment and their bottom lines with a fully funded Energy Title. This is about our government providing basic support at a time when our farmers need it most. In Congress, I will fight to do just that."

The Farm Bill, typically reauthorized every five years, supports rural communities, farmers, veterans and the poor by supporting a strong safety net and disaster assistance program for farmers; strengthening support for dairy farmers; allowing farms to meet more of our nation's energy needs; and supporting economic development in rural communities.

Craig will seek a position on the Agriculture Committee as a member of Congress.
